Setting Exercise Goals - Why Set fitness Goals?

  • You will happy about yourself when you achieve those fitness goals. Craft your own exercise-success story!

  • Exercise Goals - How Do You Set Them?

When it comes to goals or objectives that need to be achieved, set them based on the S.M.A.R.T principle!

S.M.A.R.T stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound!

Do you get the idea now? See how you can fit your exercise objectives into these different buckets.

    Specific
Be specific! Don't just say I want to be fit.

You need to be clear what you want to achieve. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to bulk up your chest and shoulders? Looking for six-pack abs?

    Measurable
It is important to add some numbers to your fitness goals so that it becomes easier to track your progress.

How many kilos do you want to lose? How many inches you want to add to your chest size? By when do you want to achieve it - 3 months, 6 months?

    Achievable
Set something realistic; something that you can achieve and feel good about!

Sprinting 100 meters in 10 seconds may not be a realistic goal as of today.

But you may definitely rewrite your fitness goals 6 or 12 months down the line when you become much fitter.

    Relevant
Setting exercise goals that are relevant helps you to stay focused!

Don't mix your other personal goals/objectives with fitness goals.

    Time-bound
Your fitness goal must be time-sensitive in nature. Just being specific is not enough! If you do not specify by when you want to achieve your fitness goals, you will procrastinate or get bored.

So have a time-line for your exercise goals, and regularly evaluate your progress based on those timelines.

    Summary

One of the major challenges everybody faces in their fitness pursuits is to ensure that they exercise regularly. To stay motivated for a long period, you need to set fitness goals for yourself from time to time. Make sure the exercise goals that you set for yourself follow the S.M.A.R.T principle.
